Akin Works to Cut Spending and Reform the Budget Process PDF Print

Washington, DC – Congressman Todd Akin, Member of the House Budget Committee, voted for two bills this week that passed the House that will force greater transparency and fiscal accountability in the United States Congress.  H.R. 3578, the Baseline Reform Act and H.R. 3582, the Pro-Growth Budgeting Act, will remove the federal budget’s automatic spending increases and require additional economic impact analysis to accompany every piece of legislation that impacts more than 0.25 percent of the economy. Congressman Akin released the following statement:

“We must remove the pro-spending bias that exists in today’s budgetary process.  It is time that we, as members of Congress, fully recognize that we are stewards of the American people’s tax dollars. These two pieces of legislation are critical steps in bringing us back to the path of fiscal responsibility.

“Our national debt already exceeds the size of our whole economy.  Within three years, the interest on our debt will cost our country $1 billion each day, unless we in Congress actively get serious to address this systemic problem.  I have voted against almost $8 trillion in deficit spending and will continue to fight to shrink the size of the federal government.”

Timeless Principles

Daniel Webster

"Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters." --- Daniel Webster served as a Member of Congress and U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, as well as United States Secretary of State.
